Gilad Barkan "Live Sessions" Recorded live on WGBH Radio in Boston by Emmy award winning engineer Antonio Oliart, "Live Sessions" features Barkan's trio on one disc, and a quartet featuring flutist Amir Milstein on the other. Both bands bear the unmistakable stamp of a pianist whom the Boston Phoenix said is "enamored of the piano's beautiful tonal qualities and its vast potential for rapturous melody." And Eyal Hareuveni says of the new CDs on All About Jazz:  "Live Sessions suggests Barkan as a thoughtful, economical musician. An adventurous and emotional artist, it also relays his commitment and mature musical personality

Posted by Kendra Shank    info@kendrashank.com                    KENDRA SHANK Continues the Celebration of her new CD A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook

Thursday, May 17 @ Kitano Hotel. Sets at 8 PM & 9:45 PM. The Kendra Shank Quartet:, Kendra Shank - voice, kalimba, Frank Kimbrough – piano, Dean Johnson – bass, Tony Moreno – drums. No cover / $10 food & drink minimum, 66 Park Avenue @ 38th St., NYC, Reservations: 212-885-7119. A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook (Challenge Records) attests to KENDRA SHANK's gifts as an astute musician and moving storyteller.  Her considerable talent and intuition enable her to get inside the intelligent hallmark songs of Abbey Lincoln and emerge in her own voice. After listening, it almost seems inevitable that Shank would be the perfect vocalist to take on the challenge of interpreting Lincoln ’s emotionally and musically-complex compositions.  And for Shank – who had planned to do graduate work in glassblowing after her time performing in Seattle and Paris as a folk singer and guitarist – this recording is the watershed moment in a long, successful music career she never planned.  Four years in the making, A Spirit Free has received glowing critical acclaim and officially establishes Kendra Shank as one of the foremost improvisational vocalists in jazz today.  (Janlyn PR)  Featuring her NY working band of 8 years, it is her fourth CD, and her first on the Dutch label, Challenge Records.. Kendra Shank and her New York working band of eight years (plus special guests) creatively reinterpret jazz legend Abbey Lincoln’s brilliant songs, while paying tribute to her as an important composer. With a rich variety of instrumentation, the genre-bending arrangements leave capacious room for organic group interplay and compelling improvised solos. A Spirit Free is Shank’s fourth CD and her first on the Dutch label, Challenge Records (released February 13, 2007. Vivian Milstein Family 2006/2007 Film Series:  Films that got Away. Here's a second chance to see those critically acclaimed films that left the theatre much too quickly!  Each viewing is followed by an open dialogue with our host/moderator Michael DiGennaro, Ph.D. Dr. DiGennaro is a distinguished member of the Mamaroneck High School English faculty. Over the course of 37 years, he has directed theatre, taught English and film, and instilled a deeper appreciation for the arts in all who hear him. All Wednesdays at 7:00pm. Fee:  $10.00 . Students and Seniors (65 plus):  $7.00. June 27. Little Children    7:00pm. Todd Field   USA 2006 (R)   2hr.10min. This is an unusually powerful adaptation by Tom Perrotta.  He and director Todd Field present a vision of the world as a giant multiplex in which every person fancies him – or herself a character in a kind of movie.  The film boasts beautiful performances by Kate Winslet as a stay at home mom, and Jackie Earle Haley, who vacillates between the personae of a helpless little boy and an intimidating Nosferatu. July 11  Live and Become    7:00pm  (Va, vis et deviens) Radu Mihaileanu  France/Israel 2005  2hr.20min.This is the magnificent, epic story of an Ethiopian boy who is airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel in 1984 during Operation Moses.  Shlomo Is plagued by two big secrets.  He is neither a Jew nor an orphan, just an African boy who survived and wants to fulfill his mother’s parting request that he “go, live, and become.”  Bouyed by a profound and unfaltering motherly love – both in memory and with his adoptive mother -  he ultimately finds an identity and a happiness all his own.  “…Rewarding, rich in humor and warmth, and abuzz with the turmoil of juggling multiple identities that is a critical element of these cross-cultural times.”- L.A.Times July 25  The Rashevski Tango 7:00pm   (Le tango des Rashevski)  Sam Garbarski  Belgium/France 2003 1hr.30min. This is a sensitive, lovely portrait of modern Jewish life in the diaspora. After the death of Rose, the secular matriarch who believed the tango would make all troubles disappear, a family of assimilated Belgian Jews struggle with defining their Judaism, their family and themselves. There are three generations of the Rashevski family, each of which has experienced the major forces of its era, -the Holocaust, growing up in wartorn Europe and assimilation and modern life in Western culture, respectively. Charming and endearing, the characters confront issues of relationships, family, religion, love, romance and interfaith marriage. August 1 The Lives of Others   7:00pm (Das Leben der Anderen) von Donnersmarck   Germany 2006 (R)  2hr.17min.Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film 2006 as well as many other prestigious awards, this political thriller and human drama begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin wall.  It ultimately takes us to 1991 and what is now reunited Germany.  The film traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler, a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany’s powerful secret police.  His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer and actress couple. Von Donnersmarck’s movie debut focuses on the horrifying, gripping and sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. STEPHANIE JORDAN & 6 HOT DIVAS GRACE THE COVERS OF VOLUME IV OF THE WORLD WHO'S WHO IN JAZZ, CABARET, MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT: "SHOWBIZ, PIONEERS, BEST SINGERS, ENTERTAINERS AND MUSICIANS FROM 1606 TO THE PRESENT"

New Orleans' jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan on the cover of World Who's Who in Jazz

NEW ORLEANS, LA - New Orleans jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan & 6 other divas has been selected to appear on the cover of latest volume of World Who's Who in Jazz. "Ms. Stephanie Jordan in her silk green dress catches your eyes. She reminds me of the flashy dashy days of Josephine Baker at the Lido in Paris. Ms. Jordan toured Europe and the United States on many occasions and enjoyed an enormous success" writes the London Monthly Herald. In a paragraph of the book, the author referred to her as "The classy lady of modern Jazz!" Times Square Press and The Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Performing Artists (FAMSPA) just published knockout is a masterpiece encyclopedic work on world showbiz and entertainment.. Showbiz, Pioneers, Best Musicians, Singers and Entertainers From 1606 to the Present, the Volume IV of the series World Who's Who in Jazz, Cabaret, Music and Entertainment is authored by Maximillien de Lafayette, an authority in the field. It is overwhelming, magnificently written, and abundant with biographies of stars and rising talents from the five corners of the globe, and majestically illustrated. Over 800 photos including vintage, era and rare pictures of stars, pioneers and divas of various golden eras of Jazz and cabaret in Europe and the United States. Peggy Judy is on the front cover; Antoinette Montague, Maria Gentile, Zola, Katie Bull, Stephanie Jordan, Irene Soderberg and Nichaud Fitzgibbon on the back cover. Carol Lexter associate editor at the World Who's Who said: "These 7 ladies were chosen out of names submitted to the editorial board. It was a tough call. We had to select unique talents with distinctive style and a great personality. They fit the bill...yes, they are extremely talented, highly respected in the music industry and hey! they look great!" Senior editor, Germaine Poitiers said: "The choice was perfect, because each one of them brings to the table a different genre and a unique talent. They create an oasis of multi-varied music ranging from Blues and Jazz to cabaret and world music...not to forget their different ethnic background...we have here artists from the United States, South Africa, Australia and New Orleans, if you cant count New Orleans as a separate magical country." Stephanie Jordan's next big engagement is at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., during the 12th Annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. However, New Orleans jazz lovers can catch her during the final week of Jazz Fest on Saturday, May 5, 2007, 9:00 pm. at The Music Tent on Claiborne, 1518 North Claiborne Avenue at an event sponsored by Cutting Edge Music Business Institute. Stephanie Jordan "sets hearts aflutter" says All About Jazz. "She's a singer with poise and pizzazz, with a voice and an appealing look that bring to mind Carmen McRae and Lena Horne." Jordan's lyrical style has also been compared to Norah Jones and Diana Krall, while others say it evokes living legends Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves. She was introduced to many new fans when she appeared on "Higher Ground," the Jazz at Lincoln Center concert for Hurricane Katrina relief hosted by Wynton Marsalis less than three weeks after the Katrina disaster that devastated New Orleans. Her rendition of "Here's to Life" was selected from that concert for the Blue Note Records' Higher Ground CD. Ms. Jordan who has been living in Maryland since hurricane Katrina is the fifth performer to emerge from a family of New Orleans bred musicians which includes her father, saxophonist Edward "Kidd Jordan", and siblings flutist Kent, violinist Rachel, and trumpeter Marlon Jordan who will accompany her for this performance. She and Marlon toured as "U.S. Jazz Ambassadors" on behalf of the U.S. State Department to Germany, Romania, Lithuania, and Ukraine in the fall of 2006 to thank the people of Europe for their help with hurricane relief. Stephanie and Marlon's CD, You Don't Know What Love Is has been highly acclaimed. Her performance on Kent Jordan's Out of This World album has been equally received. Stephanie has performed at Jazz Standard New York, the Kennedy Center, Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and on NPR Talk of the Nation among others. Stephanie Jordan has recorded a commissioned piece for the Baton Rouge Area Foundation of "Come Rain or Come Shine" which is being used as background music for a series of television and radio promotions advancing the availability of assistance for those who may be suffering from post- disaster distress as a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The campaign is part of the "InCourage" partnership; a healing initiative by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. Both pieces include a narration by noted New Orleans' Chef Leah Chase.

THE SEVEN GRACEFUL DIVAS

Seven international divas appeared on the cover of Showbiz, Pioneers, Best Singers, Musicians and Entertainers from 1606 to the Present. First row from L to R: Antoinette Montague, Maria Gentile, Zola, Irene Soderberg. Second row, from L to R: Stephanie Jordan, Nichaud Fitzgibbon, Katie Bull.

  1. Zola who is originally from South Africa; she is an international singer with a multi-varied cultural background and the daughter of a comedy and theater star who performed at a Jewish Ghetto during the Nazi Occupation of Poland. Ms. Zola is an award- winning singer with many hits and first spots on international charts and music billboards

  2. Nichaud Fitzgibbon, a well-known Jazz singer in Australia and the United States. She performed at prestigious concerts and festivals, and recently she was the leading star of a tribute concert to honor Doris Day. By the way, she is stunning.

  3. Ms. Maria Gentile winner of numerous Jazz and Cabaret awards. One of her Albums was nominated in volume III of the World Who's Who as one of the best 300 Albums of the year.
  4. A very lovely American artist by the name of Irene Soderberg appears on the back cover in a very regal and sophisticated manner, dressed like a super duper contessa from the early glorious cabaret days of Paris and Berlin. Ms. Soderberg released several albums. She is known for her perfect choice of tunes and vivacious repertoires.

  5. Ms. Stephanie Jordan in her silk green dress catches your eyes. She reminds me of the flashy dashy days of Josephine Baker at the Lido in Paris. Ms. Jordan toured Europe and the United States on many occasions and enjoyed an enormous success. In a paragraph of the book, the author referred to her as the classy lady of modern Jazz.

  6. Ms. Antoinette Montague who released a well crafted and heart felt album Pretty Blues is among the honorees who graced the cover of volume IV. De Lafayette, author of this magnetizing work wrote "Antoinette Montague is a treasure. She is warm...she has depth...she is powerful and she will steal your heart.

  7. Katie Bull is a jazz vocalist and multi-media writer/performer living in New York City since birth. She has sung with her divine mentors-jazz vocalist/composer Jay Clayton, and Jay Clayton's Voices & and jazz singer Sheila Jordan.

Shoshanna Rosenstein who compiled the roster of the listees and "invited guests" said: "We sent out 40,000 invitations to artists in 130 countries. We wanted to include the best of the best in the business from all nationalities and genres. We received 125,000 inclusion requests from artists, publicists and agents from around the globe! We can't list them all. So we chose the most accomplished ones, big names and terrific new talents as well."

Music Critics on Stephanie Jordan . . .

During the Jazz at Lincoln Center Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit concert, The Jordan Family of Jazz "delighted the Rose Theater crowd with an affecting rendition of "Here's to Life." Singer Stephanie Jordan, a standout here, was the real discovery of the evening. Her haunting rendition of this bittersweet ode associated with Shirley Horn was delivered with uncanny poise and a depth of understated soul that mesmerized the crowd and registered to the back rows. Singing with a clarity of diction that recalled Nat "King" Cole, she offered an uplifting message of hope in her heartfelt reading." -- Bill Milkowski

"Stephanie's tone and diction combines Nancy Wilson's razor-sharp diction and phrasing with Shirley Horn's economy."- Eugene Holley, Jr., Jazz Critic

"Speaking of stealing the show...Stephanie sets hearts aflutter. She's a singer with poise and pizzazz, with a voice and an appealing look that bring to mind Carmen McRae and Lena Horn" - Sandy Ingham, All About Jazz

"Every so often a new voice stands up and proclaims itself, but few do so with such supreme depth and understated soul." - JazzTime Magazine

The Washingtonian Magazine, in a two-page spread, labeled her "JAZZHOT."

Sud Quest French publication calls her "unbelievably superb."

"Stephanie Jordan, is a lady with a great set of pipes. Anyone who has ever romanced their honey to Johnny Adams's moody, lounge-lizard smoky vocals on 'You Don't Know What Love Is' will thrill to Stephanie's silk-between-the-fingers treatment of that song, the title cut." - Jason Berry - Gambit Weekly MUSIC

"Ms. Stephanie Jordan in her silk green dress catches your eyes. She reminds me of the flashy dashy days of Josephine Baker at the Lido in Paris." - London Monthly Herald.

The indoor program at the 28th Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. A treasure chest of riches! With Bob Dylan, Manu Chao, Keith Jarrett, Mike Stern, Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., Richard Bona, Zachary Richard and Francis Cabrel, Oliver Jones, Angélique Kidjo and many moreŠ Tickets go on sale this Saturday, at 9 a.m. Montréal, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - The City of Festivals is more enthusiastic than ever for the music to start - and with its 28th edition, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal delivers an embarrassment of riches! The world's largest musical event, presented by General Motors of Canada in collaboration with Alcan, proudly offers an indoor program in the very image of Montreal - cultural and multicultural metropolis par excellence. From June 28 to July 8, 2007, North America's francophone capital beats at the heart of the music world, welcoming the greatest names in jazz and its musical cousins, revealing best-kept secrets and hosting a massive urban celebration unique to this city. Over 11 days and nights, Montreal rolls out the red carpet for over 2,500 musicians from every corner of the globe. From jazz to soul to blues, with detours through traditional music, electro and folk, Montreal conjugates in every style, speaking the universal language: music! The Festival's indoor concert program alone offers close to 150 shows spread over 15 series, presented in the city's finest venues. As eclectic as ever, this edition of the Festival presents musicians and music from every region and every source, from the classic to the most avant-garde. As always, the Festival will be the only North American stop for a whole raft of artists including Skye, Erik Truffaz, Anne Ducros, and Coco Zhao. And let us not forget the legends and the marquee names - Keith Jarrett, Bob Dylan, Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, with his very special project Congo Square - or the music of the immortal Ennio Morricone, reanimated by the stunning The Spaghetti Western Orchestra, all of whom contribute to the magic of this 28th edition. Consider, for instance, the presence of artists from the prestigious ECM label including Keith Jarrett, Anouar Brahem, Tord Gustavsen, Nik Bärtsch's Ronin, and Stefano Bollani, who in themselves represent the entire diverse range of today's music. The Festival is furthermore thrilled to welcome Manfred Eicher, founder and president of the jazz label considered one of the most important in the world. To mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Fela Kuti, Afrobeat will be everywhere: indoors, where his son Femi Kuti upholds the legacy, along with Afrodizz and Antibalas, as well as in shows featured in the free outdoor schedule (coming June 5). The Festival will also be presenting an exceptional double feature, where culture and music are once again at the core of a superb collaboration: Louisianan Zachary Richard and French artist Francis Cabrel, both equally adopted - and adored! - by Quebec for years, will be sharing the spotlight at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier! This collaboration is the undisputable result of an artistic alliance-turned friendship between the pair. Grab It! The music of JacobTV.

A festival of dance, music, video, and intermedia work. Wednesday, May 2-Friday, May 4 Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria 120 Park Avenue at 42nd Street . Amanda Miller, Andre Zachary, and Rick Callender of Miro Dance Theatre. Photograph by Jacques-Jean Tiziou http://www.jjtiziou.net Highly expressive and emotional, almost anti-intellectual music, clear of texture and architectural in form, highly organized and basically tonal, though betraying no inclination towards any neoclassical procedures. A kind of nonrepetitive minimalism, brooding and powerful. -Records International. Jacob Ter Veldhuis's work possesses explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design. Preoccupied with mass media and world events, JacobTV draws raw material from those sources. He has had a huge impact on the European music scene in the past decade, but he is far less known in the United States. MAJOR COMMISSION BY MARK-ANTHONY TURNAGE AND BARB JUNGR TO CELEBRATE THE RE-OPENING OF THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

The world premiere of a Southbank Centre commissioned work by Mark-Anthony Turnage and Barb Jungr will be performed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 15 June.  The work, About Water, one of a number commissioned by the Centre to celebrate the relaunch of the site, will be performed by Southbank Centre Associate Ensemble, the London Sinfonietta, conducted by Stefan Asbury.  The Ensemble will be joined by Jungr, as well as a quartet of vocalists, straddling jazz and classical styles.  Jazz and classical instrumental soloists, including bassist John Patitucci, pianist Gwilym Simcock and cellist Gabriella Swallow will also perform. In between movements of this commission which takes water as its theme, Jungr will perform water-themed songs, in new arrangements for ensemble and orchestra by Turnage, including Nick Drake's Riverman, Otis Redding's Sitting on the Dock of the Bay and Take Me To The River by Al Green and Davin Seay. Mark-Anthony Turnage said:  "I knew as soon as I heard Barb Jungr's voice I wanted to write for her.  She is totally unique and individual.  She brings an intensity to her performance that is so exciting and rare.  I wanted to surround her with soloists I've worked with over the years from the great American bass player John Patitucci to the fabulous sax players Mark Lockheart and Martin Robertson, the outstanding jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock and the beautiful cello playing of Gabriella Swallow.  Along with four singers and the London Sinfonietta I wanted to make a lyrical brew of my own music interspersed with arrangements of some familiar and some less familiar songs." Barb Jungr said:  "When Mark asked me if he might write something for me to sing, I was thrilled and amazed. And then I wrote some texts and we were collaborating.  Working outside of one's own genre pushes the envelope - stretches the muscles.  I take back to my own work new harmonic ideas and new improvisation.  I hope I bring to Mark's work something new, too. It's a joy always to be in inspiring and inspired company, Mark is a terrific artist and I'm loving working with him." New Orleans' jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan performs at the Kennedy Center's Women in Jazz Festival

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., will hold the 12th Annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival from May 10-12. New Orleans' jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan returns for her second engagement at the Kennedy Center on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The series of concerts features several ticketed events as well as free shows on the Millennium Stage. All of the 2006 concerts sold out--so be sure to reserve your seats now for this popular Kennedy Center showcase featuring today's top female jazz artists. The Washington Post says the festival "speaks volumes about the contributions women have made to jazz--and continue to make-- both here and abroad." Stephanie Jordan was introduced to many new fans when she appeared on "Higher Ground," the Jazz at Lincoln Center concert for Hurricane Katrina relief hosted by Wynton Marsalis less than three weeks after the Katrina disaster that devastated New Orleans. "On that memorable night; none sang with greater authority or emotional resonance than Stephanie Jordan, who enthralled the packed house and a national PBS NPR audience of millions with an ascendant reading of "Here's To Life." Framed by her siblings Marlon (trumpet), Kent (flute), and Rachel (violin), each, like their sister, a native New Orleanian newly uprooted from their home. Jordan brought the concert to its climax, rendering the Phyllis Molinary lyric-an instant classic when the late Shirley Horn recorded it in 1991-with impeccable diction, dead- center pitch, and a personal point of view, acknowledging Horn's antecedent version while drawing independent conclusions about tempo, phrasing, and dynamics. In the process, revealed a fully evolved tonal personality, one that can be mentioned in a conversation about such distinguished mentors and influences as Horn, Abbey Lincoln, and Nancy Wilson." - Jazz at Lincoln Center. Their rendition of "Here's to Life" was selected from that concert for the Blue Note Records' Higher Ground CD. Ms. Jordan who has been living in Maryland since hurricane Katrina is the fifth performer to emerge from a family of New Orleans bred musicians which includes her father, saxophonist Edward "Kidd Jordan. ", and siblings flutist Kent, violinist Rachel, and trumpeter Marlon Jordan who will accompany her for this performance. Stephanie has performed at Jazz Standard New York, The Kennedy Center, and the Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and on NPR Talk of the Nation among others. Stephanie Jordan has recorded a commissioned piece for the Baton Rouge Area Foundation of "Come Rain or Come Shine" which is being used as background music for a series of television and radio promotions advancing the availability of assistance for those who may be suffering from post-disaster distress as a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The campaign is part of the "InCourage" partnership; a healing initiative by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. Both pieces include a narration by noted New Orleans' Chef Leah Chase. Marlon Jordan was one of the "Young Jazz Lions" who were signed, recorded and promoted on major record labels in the 1980s. He recorded three impressive LPs for Columbia from 1998 to 1992, For You Only, Learson's Return, and The Undaunted, and one for the Arabesque label entitled Marlon's Mode in 1997. "His latest album, announces the return of an exceptional trumpeter. This dancing and delicious document reveals a mature artist who sounds like himself. You can hear Jordan's clean, boppish lines laced with power, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the entire jazz trumpet tradition, signed in own unique sonic signature" writes jazz critic Eugene Holley, Jr.

The incomparable Tony Bennett has gone on record naming Keely Smith "one of the greatest jazz-pop singers of all time." Mercedes Hall Pure Emotion.

By Edward Blanco. New York-based vocalist Mercedes Hall releases her second album with Pure Emotion revealing an inner passion behind the music she presents. An accomplished singer with a unique style of her own, Hall evokes comparisons with the great Billie Holliday and Dinah Washington. She is the type of singer that lets it all hang out holding nothing back, in essence voicing songs with feelings and yes, "Pure Emotions." This album was inspired in part a result of her personal friendship with the late Cuban-born Chico O'Farrill, a catalyst of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement in New York's jazz scene. In fact the title cut is an O'Farrill chart arranged by son Arturo who also plays piano on the track and on the album. Hall completes the tribute to O'Farrill by adding romantic lyrics to the bossa nova shaded melody expressed with grit and fire by the singer in what turns out to be, in this reviewer's opinion, the best number on the album. The repertoire contains 14 songs of some familiar tunes given new treatment by the vocalist's uncommon but mesmerizing singing style and vocal range. The program begins with Victor Young's "Ghost of A Chance," that changes tempo several times and is warmly accompanied by pianist and producer Glafkos Kontemeniotis. Then there's Cole Porter's classic "What Is This Thing Called Love," arranged as a samba in such a unique fashion one can hardly believe it's Porter's standard. Hall warms to the light ballad of "The Masquerade Is Over" delivering a sensuous performance. If you listen closely to her rendition of "Lover Man," you may hear a bit of the Billie Holliday style. Turning bluesy, Hall hits some high notes before singing the blues on "Someone Else Is Steppin' In" complete with a little scatting. Another outstanding track, is the spicy and very jazzy version of the Arlen/Mercer immortal tune"That Old Black Magic," with some more scatting and a nice solo from Jerry Dodgion on the tenor. She finishes with a softer and misty interpretation of "You've Changed," featuring a delicious piano solo. Besides the three players previously mentioned, the personnel includes Frank Wagner(bass), Kazi McCoy(drums), Nate Birkey( trumpet, flugelhorn), Peter Brainin (tenor), Bashiri Johnson(percussions) and David Moreno (guitar). Pure Emotion is unquestionably a thoroughly enjoyable album of beautiful light jazz. With graceful passion and an elegant style, Mercedes Hall provides the kind of performance you would expect from the title of this album. The lady possess a powerful and distinctive voice that makes her a one of a kind musical wonder.-Ejazznews.

Welcome to my e-zine!  I have many wonderful things to share and tried to make this "E-Z" to read. Please check it out and send it on to folks who might like to hear what we're up to.  If you look at the titles under "Latest News" (to the left) you can click into any title and magically be taken directly to the little article.  Throughout this newsletter, click into names & photos and visit all sorts of wonderful websites and people of musical interest! Thanks for your support.  And thanks for supporting live music!!! At a ceremony Tuesday evening, May 1st, at B.B. King's in New York City, I was awarded best Female Jazz Vocalist at the 21st Annual MAC Awards.  The Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs (MAC) honors excellence in live entertainment and recordings in cabaret, jazz and comedy. At this same event, Daryl Kojak my long time collaborator and friend, was honored as a nominee in the Best Musical Director category.  As is always the case, my mother was in attendance to cheer me on along with my niece, Stephany.  They cried and ate cake.  I happily accepted the award, thanking many folks I've had the good fortune to work with and be supported by - especially Daryl Kojak - and then I had a couple of Cosmos and enjoyed the rest of the terrific evening.  A good time was had by all.  And, for the record, I also thanked some of the musicians that I've worked with most often over the years and want to repeat that here.  Check them out:  Sean Conly, Gene Lewin, "Sweet" Sue Terry, Dwayne "Cook" Broadnax and Cameron Brown!  I also want to acknowledge my colleague and friend (and 2007 MAC Nominee for Female Vocalist), Sue Matsuki, for her support and encouragement throughout the year as well as my voice teacher (and, yes, fab vocalist!), Marianne Challis, for close to two decades of work together! Another exciting honor! Starting Monday, 5-7-07 and running throughout the entire week, I've been chosen to be one of three featured artists in rotation on the Sonicbids home page (because they love my music and think my e-press kit is terrific - that's a quote - please don't think I'm bragging!).  Visit Sonicbids (click on the logo above) and see what I had to say about my work and other truly fab stuff (and please read the next paragraph to learn more about Sonicbids).

FYI: Sonicbids was launched in 2001 on a simple idea: that it should be super-easy for artists and music promoters to find each other online, without sending bulky press kits through the postal mail.  Since then, Sonicbids has become one of the fastest-growing music communities on the web trusted by over 70,000 artists and over 6,000 festivals, music conferences, and clubs from over 100 countries.

There's lots of great music coming up in NYC in the next few weeks and  I personally want to invite you out to a bunch of shows I'm involved with.  First off, Christina Courtin's Running Kicks begin a weekly residency at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction tomorrow night at 9:00 PM.  They'll be playing stripped down acoustic sets Thursday nights at 9:00 on May 10, 17 and 24.  Then on Saturday, June 9 at 8:00 PM, for the first time ever, the Kicks will do their thing backed by a 25-piece orchestra called The Knights at the Brooklyn Lyceum.  If you've not seen Christina sing yet, I highly recommend you come out to one of the Mo's shows to catch her in an intimate setting and then come back again to watch her blow the roof of the Lyceum with the help of a full orchestra. On Friday, June 1 at 9:30 PM, another one of my favorite bands on the planet, Brazzaville, return to NYC for the first time in over 4 years to play Joe's Pub.  And for the first time, lead singer/songwriter David Brown is bringing members of the Barcelona line-up of Brazzaville to play with him.  They'll be debuting songs off of their latest American release, "East L.A. Breeze," so if you're a fan who's been waiting patiently for a NY Brazzaville show, now's your chance.  There's no telling when they'll come back! Be in touch with me at 646.654.9324 or eva@buzzwordpr.com and I'll hook ya up. Thanks + best, Eva.
